What is an Asymmetrical VR Game (And Why Are They So Fun)?

Ever been stuck on the sidelines, watching someone else flail through a VR game while you wait (and wait) for your turn? We've all been there; standing by as chaos unfolds in the middle of the living room.

With asymmetrical VR games you don’t have to wait to join the fun! Forget about mindlessly scrolling through your phone while you silently calculate how long your friend has had the headset. Your time as an innocent bystander is over!

Asymmetric gameplay means different roles, different screens, and one shared slice of delicious chaos. One or more players step into VR, while the rest jump in on phones, tablets, or computers—no extra headset required.

Why We Love Asymmetrical VR

Because it’s inherently social. No one is left behind!

Even Grandma can get in on the chaos; hurling exploding barrels and spooky eyeballs from her iPad while the grandkids scramble in VR. And if she’s feeling bold? She might just grab the headset and take a swing herself.

Asymmetrical VR brings everyone into the action; on the couch, at parties, even in the classroom. And the best part? Whether you're swinging for glory or sabotaging your friends, you're just as important to the mayhem.

Meet Fruit Golf, Your New Favourite Party Game

Fruit Golf turns every swing into a chaotic, laugh-out-loud party. Step into VR and try to putt a pineapple down a pirate ship while your friends sabotage your every move using a headset or the companion app (iOS/Android).

As the VR golfer lines up a shot with their chosen fruit, across wacky, over-the-top courses, everyone else is busy dropping cannon balls, ectoplasm, mouse traps, and whatever nonsense they can to throw them off.

It’s part mini-golf, part mayhem, and 100% a good time.

Here are a Few of Our Favourite Asymmetrical VR Games:

In Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, one player is trapped in a virtual room with a ticking time bomb they must defuse. The other players are the “Experts” who must give the instructions to defuse the bomb by deciphering the information found in the Bomb Defusal Manual. But there’s a catch: the Experts can’t see the bomb, so everyone will need to talk it out –fast!

DAVIGO is a VR vs. PC, physics-driven battle game where one player becomes the towering GIANT and the rest fight back as tiny KNIGHTS across wild maps and modes. You’re the boss...smash the ground, hurl boulders, uproot trees, and unleash full-body chaos to crush every last Knight. Every move is powered by physics, so if you can lift it, you can launch it.

Elsewhere Electric is an asymmetric game for two players: one in VR, one on a mobile phone. You’re two parts of a crucial team that has been sent by the executives of Elsewhere Electric to get their facility back online. One player, the Operator, must stay back in the van and relay information to the Installer as they make their way through the facility. You need to depend on your sights, senses, and your buddy to make it out alive.

Gather your family and friends, defend the acorns, or lead the squirrels in their daring heist. In Acron: Attack of the Squirrels! one player in VR becomes the mighty tree, protecting golden acorns, while 1-8 others play as crafty squirrels on their mobile devices (iOS and Android), trying to steal them.

So grab your friends, a VR headset, a mobiles device, and go smash some fruit! Let us know what you think of Fruit Golf!
